Can You Bring Toothpaste on a Plane? A Smarter, TSA-Friendly Alternative

Can You Bring Toothpaste on a Plane? A Smarter, TSA-Friendly Alternative

If you’re bringing toothpaste on a flight and want to get through airport security fast, you should know the rules about bringing toothpaste in checked luggage and carry-on bags through TSA security. TSA still has strict requirements for bringing toothpaste on a flight and will toss your toothpaste out if you’ve brought too much. Fortunately, travelers today have more travel-friendly options than ever before, including toothpaste tablets that easily meet TSA standards without the hassle.

TSA Toothpaste Checked Luggage Rules and Tips

If you plan to bring toothpaste in a checked bag, you’ll have an easy time getting it through security, no matter its size. However, you should review our answers to a couple of the most commonly asked questions about bringing toothpaste in a checked bag below:

Can You Bring Toothpaste on a Plane in Checked Luggage?

Yes, you can bring any size of toothpaste on a plane if it’s stored in your checked luggage. Since you’ll have no way to reach your luggage until after your flight is over and you’ve deboarded, you won’t find any regulations on how much toothpaste you can bring in your checked bag.

How Do You Store Toothpaste Safely in a Checked Bag?

The last thing you want to find while opening up your suitcase after a long flight is toothpaste smeared all over your clothes and bag. Fortunately, there are two options to prevent this:

  1. Before your flight, make sure your toothpaste lid or cap is firmly shut. Next, place the toothpaste in a sealable plastic bag to prevent it from getting all over your suitcase if the cap breaks.

  2. Or better yet, consider switching to solid toothpaste tablets—no mess, no leaks, and no plastic tubes to worry about.

TSA Toothpaste Carry-on Luggage Rules and Tips

Carry-on bags are where things get trickier. As you prepare to fly with toothpaste, check out our answers to the most frequently asked questions about bringing toothpaste in a carry-on bag through TSA:

Can You Bring Toothpaste on a Plane in Carry-On Luggage?

You can bring toothpaste on a plane in your carry-on bag, but there are some TSA toothpaste rules that restrict how much you can bring in a carry-on.

How Much Toothpaste Is Allowed by TSA in a Carry-On Bag?

TSA allows flyers to bring 3.4 oz (or 100 ml) of toothpaste in their carry-on bag. Keep in mind that the bottle itself should have a maximum capacity of 3.4 oz even if you don’t plan to store more than 3.4 oz of toothpaste in it, as larger bottle sizes can still be confiscated. For example, a 6 oz bottle with 3.4 oz of toothpaste inside it could still be confiscated for violating TSA rules.

If you plan to bring any other liquid, gel, or aerosol products alongside your toothpaste, they must all be placed in a 1 quart-sized resealable bag. The TSA restricts passengers to one 1-quart-sized resealable bag with liquid, gel, or aerosol products, so don’t try to bring a second bag through security.

What Is the 3-1-1 Liquid Rule?

The 3-1-1- liquid rule is shorthand for TSA’s regulation for bringing pastes, liquids, aerosols, gels, or creams through security in a carry-on bag. This rule states that you can bring a quart-sized bag filled with the previously mentioned items, but each item is limited to 3.4oz or less.

Are There Exceptions for Prescription Toothpaste in Carry-On Luggage?

TSA does allow exceptions to their 3-1-1 liquid rule for medically necessary liquids and/or medications. Since prescription toothpaste is medically necessary, you should be able to bring it with you. However, you’ll need to follow TSA’s rules for bringing medications that don’t meet the 3-1-1 liquid regulation.

Before you go through security with your prescription toothpaste, place it in its own bowl or bin (alongside any other medically necessary liquid, gel, or aerosol that doesn’t meet the 3-1-1 liquid rule). Next, declare the items to a TSA officer at the inspection checkpoint, and they should usually allow you to bring the items through security.

Do Different Airlines Have Different Regulations for Toothpaste?

No, toothpaste regulations don’t change based on the airline you’re flying with. Instead, TSA applies them universally to all passengers for increased security and efficiency.

Are Toothpaste Tablets Better for Frequent Flyers?

If you’re tired of having your toothpaste thrown away by TSA or are just looking for a more convenient teeth-cleaning option while flying, toothpaste tablets are a great option. These tablets are like traditional toothpaste but without the water added to them, making them easy to travel with. Since the tablets are compressed into a pill-like form and don’t have water in them, you can take as many of them as you’d like in a checked or carry-on bag while flying.

How Do You Brush Your Teeth With Toothpaste Tablets?

Unlike traditional toothpaste, you’ll need to gently chew the tablet before you start brushing your teeth. As you chew, the tablet will mix with your saliva and become a paste. After it becomes a paste, wet your toothbrush and brush your teeth like you normally would for a couple of minutes.
