Key Questions and Answers
-
Why are dental implants considered a game-changer?
With success rates exceeding 90%, dental implants offer predictable and lasting solutions, unlike older methods that involved saving severely compromised teeth. -
How has the philosophy of dentistry changed with implants?
Previously, dentists focused on preserving every root or tooth fragment, even in poor condition. Today, implants provide a better alternative for ensuring long-term oral health. -
What were earlier methods of tooth restoration?
Early methods relied heavily on crowns, bridges, and saving even minimal tooth structures. These techniques were less predictable and more labor-intensive. -
Why is this shift important for patient outcomes?
Implants not only restore function and aesthetics but also improve quality of life. They’re durable, prevent bone loss, and allow for better overall oral health management. -
How does the modern dental curriculum address implants?
Dental students today receive comprehensive training in implantology, whereas older curricula emphasized preservation and rehabilitative techniques like perioprosthetics.

When I was younger as a dentist, um, we didn't have, um, implants. So the fact that we have implants that work and work successfully in high 90 percentile is incredible because there's very few medical procedures that work that well. Yeah. So, um, we're able to replace teeth that we weren't able to do before.
So when I was first trained, we tried to save every little thing that we could in the patient's mouth. And that philosophy has changed to where we're If you feel like you can't successfully replace something in a high 90th percentile, then you go to implants, which is a huge change in, you know, paradigm shift.
So, I mean, I don't think Jordan was even exposed to what I was trained in peri, in perioprosthetics, where every little root, every little piece of tooth was tried to be saved. And with crowns, we would rehabilitate the mouth. That type of theory has kind of gone out the window. And now that we have implants, you kind of jump into that.
