How does oral health, specifically having all your teeth, influence nutrient absorption and overall health?
When your teeth aren't in good condition, or you’re missing teeth, it affects your ability to properly chew food. Chewing food into small enough pieces is essential for your stomach to process and absorb nutrients. Without proper chewing, your overall health begins to decline as your body struggles to get the nourishment it needs.

Key Questions and Answers
-
Why is chewing food properly so important for nutrient absorption?
Chewing food breaks it down into smaller pieces, making it easier for stomach acid to further digest and absorb nutrients. -
What happens when teeth are missing or damaged?
Without the full set of teeth to chew food properly, larger food particles enter the stomach, which compromises nutrient absorption and can lead to malnutrition over time. -
Can poor oral health lead to serious health issues?
Yes, if you're not absorbing nutrients properly, it can lead to conditions like diabetes and other metabolic disorders, as your body isn't getting the full benefit from your diet.
Conclusion
The connection between oral health and overall wellness is undeniable. As Dr. Jordan Harper highlights, having healthy teeth is essential not only for a radiant smile but also for breaking down food properly to ensure optimal nutrient absorption. Missing or damaged teeth can compromise your body's ability to process essential nutrients, potentially leading to serious health concerns over time.

"So we were talking a little bit off camera about the oral cavity. Could you kind of walk me through a little bit in depth of what you were referencing there? So let's say we haven't been taking good care of our teeth, right? Um, we haven't been brushing with ENML, and things start to fall apart, right? As teeth fall apart, um, and as you lose some of that ability to chew up that food properly with missing teeth, the bolus, we call it, of food is not small enough.
So what does that do? Well now, as you swallow and it goes into your stomach, your stomach needs that food a certain size for the acid to break it down and absorb the nutrients. If the bolus is too big, are you absorbing those nutrients properly? No. Right? The bolus of food is too big, you're not absorbing the nutrients you need. So now your overall health starts to deteriorate, right? Maybe you're more at risk for diabetes, whatever it is. Right. And so it's super, super important to maintain the proper number of teeth because that's what allows you to chew the food small enough, you know, to then get and stay healthy."
